MFA Thesis

The MFA thesis show features some new additions to the familiar set up of the Mason Gross Gallery. The hanging walls in the main room of the gallery compliment Kristin Malkin's wall sculptures well. It enabled the viewer to look through the holes in the parallel wooden planks.
Some of the other artists had very interesting installations. Guena's amorphous life forms crept up and down the walls and floated around the viewer on wire that allowed them to rotate and be viewed from all sides. Erin Schoonebeek's paintings and prints were arranged above and below each other, with some on the floor where the floor meets the wall, which seemed a bit haphazard to me. By far the most elaborate installation belonged to Erin Dunn, with a floral environment and video, tapestry, and paintings that extended off the canvas and onto the wall of the gallery. I really think this piece should have had the room to itself, because it completely overshadowed the quieter and more plain pieces it shared the room with. It took me a long time standing in the room to even notice that there was other work in there.
